e0008516 - Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed.

Afternoon,

I am having serious problems getting a backup with Backup Exec 2010 R3, revision 5204 running on Windows 2008 R2 which is running hyper-V.

The error I am getting is:

e0008516 - Resources specified for snapshot do not have any valid data on them. Check if files were deleted or renamed. For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-34070

I have now created a test backup job which only backs ups the local system state and shadow copy components, it fail's every time.

I have tried running it with and without AOFO, I have also tried manually selecting which VSS technology to use with out success. No VSS errors appear in the event logs.

This server is running 5 Virtual servers and I haven't had a successful backup for a while so any assistance would be gratefully recieved.

If I try and backup just one of the virtual machines, they also fail with the same error and its always on "shadow copy components".

Thanks

Jon

  • Is the remote agent installed in these VMs ?

And do you select the Hyper-V node or do you explicitly select the individual VMs for the backup ?

Lastly, post the backup failure, open a cmd and run the commans - vssadmin list write

  • Hi,

I can confirm that the Hyper-V agent is installed and the remote agent is installed on all of the VM's.

At the moment I have no Virtual machines in the selection list at all, via Hyper-V or by browsing the network, I only have shadow copy components and system state of the local machine selected.  It only takes a few minutes to run / fail.

The Vm's have not been remaned and I have 2 accounts, servername\administrator and domainname\administrator.  As the Hyper-V server is not on the domain  I am using servername\administrator account.

I was trying to start at the beginning and get the local machine backuped up before trying the VM's.

    Thanks

    Jon

  • Hi,

I had already tried the first link without success and the 2nd link applies to a windows 2003 server, its a 2008 R2 OS.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks

    Jon

  • Ensure AOFO is enabled...

Should be using the Micorsoft Volume Shadow Copy Services as the provider and also check the option "process logical volumes for backup one a time"

And as you are backing up on the system state and shadow copy, ensure nothing else such as CPS data, DFS shares etc are selected...Confirm via the View Selection Details that the selections are fine..might wanna create a new selection list and job to check as well..
