ERROR MESSAGE: Unable to open \ because it is currently being backed up

Using Window 03 Server, BE v9.1 Rev4691, and I created 2 seperate jobs:

1st one only backup:
"\\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group"

2nd job backup:
"\\EXCHANGE\Shadow?Copy?Components"
"\\EXCHANGE\C: "
"\\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes"
"\\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Exchange Public Folders".

For the 1st job, I get the following error and exception:

ERROR:
Backup - \\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group Error, Unable to open \ because it is currently being backed up by another process.
Database or database element is corrupt

EXCEPTION
Backup - \\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group WARNING: "\\MWEXCHANGE\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (MWEXCHANGE)" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.
WARNING: "\\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group\Public Folder Store (MWEXCHANGE)" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.
WARNING: "\\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group\Log files" is a corrupt file.
This file cannot verify.

For the 2nd job, I get the following exception:

EXCEPTION
Backup - \\MWEXCHANGEOFO: Initialization failure on: "Shadow?Copy?Components". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
OFO: Snapshot error (0xfffffed1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status.

Everything was working fine for the pass 3 months, I was suprised that the stand alone First Storage Group backup fail.

  • Under shadow copy components on that server expand it out and uncheck user data
  • Thanks for your reply.

If I uncheck the User Data under SCC, how can I backup those data? Do I need to create another job for it to backup?

Do you know why am I getting all that error messages??
  • Hi,

The error "Error, Unable to open because it is currently being backed up by another process." seen in the job log, usually occurs when Exchange agent & Volume shadow copy component are simultaneously trying to backup the Exchange Information Store. To resolve this issue deselect 'Exchange server' selection under ShadowCopyComponents | Userdata . Perform backup and observe the result.

Since the Exchange server files are in use by VSS, Backup Exec will not be able to perform the backup of these open files and hence reports them as corrupt.
You may also refer the following technote to verify the same.
