Error: The operation failed to acquire the minimum number of drives and media..

Hi there,

I have backup exec 2010 and my one backup keeps failing. I have 15 desktops that are selected. The media set is set to prevent overwrite for 6 days. This is all being backed up to a terastation that has plenty of space. When I try to back it up, I get the following error:

Job ended: Thursday, April 07, 2011 at 8:42:17 AM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe0000f16 - The operation failed to acquire the minimum number of drives and media needed.
Final error category: Job Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-3862

After much research, everything pointed to my media set. I deleted it and recreated the media set. Didnt work. I tried switching to the 5 day overwrite protection and it failed with the same error. I switched my media set to a media set that has the following settings:

Overwrite protection: 3 weeks

Append period: Infinite - allow append

This worked but the only difference is the overwrite protection period. Any suggestion or Idea of what is causing this? Its not the tera station because the 3 week one works fine, as well as other backups using it. It doesnt seem to be the selections because they worked fine with the weekly one. So it points to the media set but I dont know why its doing that. I need it to run weekly, and not over write for 6 days.

  •

When this job begins: Append to media, terminate job is no appendable media is available

    to

When there is no appendable media available the job will terminate, due to this setting your jobs are

    failing.

When this job begins: Append to media, overwrite job if no appendable media is available

This option 1st checks appendable media if there is no appenable media it starts overwriting the

data whose retention period is over.

  • In the job properties check the device and media tab what option you have selected

    for "When this job Begins"

  • Shows

    Device:

    Terastation

    Media set:

6 Days (one i have issues with)

    When this job begins:

Append to media, terminate job is no appendable media is available

  • Probably the below settings will resolve your issue.

Media set settings: OPP 6days Append None.

Media Protection Level FULL (Under tools --> Options --> Media Management)

And media overwrite option: Overwrite recyclable media in the target media set before overwriting the scratch media.

Job should start as Overwrite Only.

    Regards...

  • That did not change anything sadly. What did change and seems to be working is switching

When this job begins: Append to media, terminate job is no appendable media is available

    to

When this job begins: Append to media, overwrite job if no appendable media is available

What exactly does that mean? If there is no media, dont do the job .. but the second option i posted.. overwrite job? what job is it overwriting?

Oldest among the recyclable media in the target media set will get overwritten.
