Errors when trying to catalog B2D Media

Hi all,

I'm currently having some issues when cataloging B2D media. I recently rebuilt/reformatted my media server running Windows 2003 to start afresh and kept the existing B2D data which resides in a different partition.

In order to test cataloging and restoring files, I installed up Backup Exec 11d, and installed all the hot fixes available off liveupdate.

I setup the B2D folder as normal, and inventoried all the files within the B2D folder, which came back successful. I proceeded to catalog the media by select a random file within the B2D folder, right-clicking on it and selected Catalog.

The catalog ran for a while and then failed, with the error:
e0000900 - The requested media is not listed in the media index and could not be mounted. To add the media's catalog information to the disk-based catalogs, run an inventory operation on the media and resubmit the Catalog operation.

I performed the inventory again. Then another catalog on another random B2D files and now get the following error:

e00084ca - The data being read from the media is inconsistent.

I get this error every single time I try catalog one of the B2D Files.

Now when I performed these B2D backups before reformatting the entire machine they all reported back successful (including the verify).

What is going wrong here?

    It sounds like there is a possibility that the media family for the B2D files is missing a media file or a media file created early in the media family history has been overwritten.

    If a piece of media from early in the media family history is overwritten in a subsequent backup job you end up with a scenario that is similar to a picture of a snake eating itself from the tail to the head. When this occurs you end up with B2D files that are looking for backup sets that occurred earlier and are in the media family history but are no longer available so the job is categorized as failed when the backup sets in the media cannot be located.

    You may want to review the job log(s) and see what B2D files are getting cataloged and which are not and simply make certain to catalog each B2D file and ignore the failure notices. After cataloging, test the ability to restore the data; there shouldn't be any problems. If the data can be restored then I would suggest making a duplicate of your backups to a NEW B2D device so that the media family history problem is resolved.

    The scenario I described is less likely to occur in BE 11 as changes were made to catalogs that should prevent this type of issue.
