Exchange 2010 GRT Restore

I am testing backup/restore options on Exchange 2010 - i want to allow GRT restores on my mailbox databases.

My currently setup is:

1. Using user account, which is local admin on Exchange Server, member of Domain Admins and member of Exchange Organisation Administrators

2. GRT is enabled on backup job

3. Exchange 2010 SP2 and Backup Exec 2012 with all latest SPs/updates

Both one-time and schedule backups complete successfully - though when i go to restore individual items, i am not presented with the 'normal' tree/branch view of each mailbox. In the main pain i am given "none" as the mailboxes avialable for restore.

My backup job has a size of what i would expect from this backup job (currently only have Backup Exec mailbox and test mailbox on this particular database).

Any help will be appreciated.

  • I logged a support case with Dell (this issue was on one of their dl2200 boxes).

It appears to be a bug in 2012 - and will be resolved with their 2012 R2 release - though there is a registry key to allow the backup/restore to complete correctly.

Basically - the backup is completing correctly, its the indexing/cataloguing of the backup to allow GRT restores which was not running properly. BE 2012 reported in diganostics that it didn't have perissions to the temp GRT backup and restore locations to perform the index/catalogue - and it did! :)

See this article for the temp fix.

  • You must also have the Exchange Management Tools installed on the Backup Exec media server.

  • Thanks - i've got the Management Tools installed already.

(It wouldn't of been able to backup any exchange data without them.)

  • Assuming that your backup job completes successfully, which means the core permissions are not an issue.

Since you're unable to expand GRT selection in the restore view, seems like something to do with the requirements for GRT. The account being used to backup, does it have an active mailbox on your Exchange Server? It should not be hidden from GAL too..

  • Permissions pass successfully - and the job completes successfully.

Account used has an active and un-hidden mailbox.

    ---FYI---

When i look at the contents of the backup job in BE2012, it shows me just the database and logs, almost like its not doing a GRT, even though i'm selecting it.

  • Restoring from tape or disk ? If tape, try duplicating the backup sets to disk & re-attempt.
