I did a backup of my server and the \\server_name\Shadow?Copy?Components directory is listed in the log has having a byte count of
184,040,153,607. This is causing my total backup to be 200GB+ of data. There does not seem to be anywhere near this much "real" data on the server. How do I find out what all this data is and stop it from being backed up?
Dear Sir:
Please open a new backup job settings window (as if you were going to crerate a new backup job) and select the server you are referring to. Expand all of the branches of the Shadow Copy Components and check the contents.
Some possible resources that might be under SCC can be Distributed File System contents and the Deduplication folders. My bet is that the last item is the one present on your case.
If you like, please post the contents of the SCC on your server, or a screenshot, and we can assist you in identifying what is taking so much space.

File attached with screenshot. Please note that the server is running DFS. All of the documents replicated via DFS are in the D:\shared directory and I specifically had excluded that in the selection list. As FYI, the job log shows the backup of the D: as being quite small.

This one does seem to include the replicated folders directory. Just out of curiosity, since I manually deselected D:\shares where these files live, why do they get selected again as part of the shadow copy components?
And one second question, should I deselect "Distributed file system replication" and anything below it? My goal is to NOT back up the files (since other DFS servers already have them and are being fully backed up) but do want to keep any DFS configuration so if I have to restore this server data will re-replicate to it.

If it only holds the DFS resources.
If they become selected again please try with a new backup job and let me know.

DSF is always backed up as part of the shadows copy component. If you look at your file backup, you would see that the D:\share is empty.
If you deselect the DSF portion of the shadows copy component, you would not be able to backup the D:\share at all.
