Hard Disk rotation need help schedualing backup job

Hi Guys I need some help with 2012 backup schedules. I'm still trying to get my head around the new changes.

I want to setup the following HD rotation for a month (and ongoing) using 3 external hard disks using the Rotate feature. The issue isnt around the HD media iteself that bit I get.

So I want to do this:

HD1 - Week 1 - Full on Monday with Incremental on Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri

HD2 - Week 2 - Full on Monday with Incremental on Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri

HD1 - Week 3 -  Full on Monday with Incremental on Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri

HD2 - Week 4 - Full on Monday with Incremental on Tue, Wed, Thur, Fri

HD3 - Monthly - Full kept indefinatley (scheduled or run manually as required)

How does the Week 1 job know not to run incrementals after Friday so as not to cut into Week 2's job? Is BE smart enough to superceed this job and run the Full on the next Monday?

I find it much harder to work through it with the new interface. I miss the ability to schedule using the calendar in the previous versions but thats just me.

Cheers,

Calis

  • First of all you should setup a device pool for the storage on HD1 and HD2.  See my article below on how to do so.

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/how-rotate-external-harddisks-be-2012

When you setup your backup job, setup up the jobs as follows

    - for the full backup, use a weekly recurrance and specify only Monday

    - for the incremental backup, use a weekly reccurance and specify Tue, Wed. Thu and Fri

Using the above patterns, you will achieve your aim, i.e. run full backups on Mondays and incremental backups for the rest of the day.

Make sure that you swap HD1 and HD2 on Monday before the Monday full backup runs.

For your monthly job, just use a monthly recurrance pattern and choose the day in the month you want the job to run.

  • You can schedule using the recurrence pattern.

Choose recurrence to Week and select the days to run. In your case do not select saturday and sunday in the incremental schedule.

  • Sorry been very busy!

Thanks pkh I saw your post before I posted this here. Very helpful and I've setup the disk and Kiren I setup the schedule and its all working a treat so thanks.

Just a tip for anyone else setting this up: Take note of the Global setting under Storage for Disk devices.

The default setting is limit a disk that has been disconnected for at least 14 days to read-only!!! This did my head in till I found it. Set a high number here if you dont want to be caught out. Sethe last option in this TECH article here

    Cheers,
