Help regarding what license(s) to purchase...

Hi. I'm a little confused about what solution I need and would appreciate some help.

We have a basic setup here which I am looking to backup with Backup Exec (we have about 30 employees).
Here is my set up:

Windows Server 2003 Standard (NOT small business server edt.)

  • DC / Active Directory
  • File server
  • Exchange

Windows Server 2008 Standard R2

  • SQL Only

I'm looking to backup the Windows Server 2K3 machine in full (system state, files, exchange) and the system state and SQL DB on the 2K8 Server

As a minimum what Backup exec liceses do I need?

So far I've been quoted for

A). 2 x Backup Exec Small Business Edition 2012 which I'm told includes exchange & SQL? (roughly £900)

-- or --

B). Backup Exec 2012 + 2 x Windows Agent + 1 x Exchange Agent + 1 x SQL Agent (roughly £2,000+)

Regards

Adam

  • The you will require 1 BE 20102 small business edition and one small business Edition Agent for Windows. http://www.emea.symantec.com/beguide/en/files/BE2012_customer_license_guide.pdf
  • 2 x Backup Exec Small Business Edition 2012 which I'm told includes exchange & SQL? (roughly £900)

About licenses it is correct. But if iam not wrong, you need a SBS version of OS to install the software. Do you have it?

EDIT: I'm Wrong... Windows Server 2008 family and 2003 family is listed as supported OS for server. I.e you can proceed with SBS. Have a look here about compatible OS: http://www.symantec.com/products/sysreq.jsp?pcid=pcat_business_cont&pvid=296_1

Extract from Date sheet: Simple yet comprehensive, Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition is packaged with the needs of small businesses in mind, supporting any Windows Server® or Windows® Small Business Server environment, and providing total protection in a singlelicense for Microsoft® Exchange, Active Directory®, SQL Server®, SharePoint®, and Hyper-V® applications.

  • Hi Kerian

So two off the shelf versions of Backup Exec Small Business Server should do what I need?

Reading the below, Would I not need 1 x Backup Exec Small Business Server + 1 x Windows Agent + 1 X SQL? This looks to work out more expensive than just purchasing 2 x Backup Exec Small Business Server?

A single license of Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition provides total backup and recovery protection for one server including
application protection for SQL, Exchange, Hyper-V, SharePoint and Active Directory. Each license can be easily expanded to support up to 3
servers (2 remote servers) by purchasing an additional Agent for Windows for Small Business Edition, Agent for Linux or Agent for Mac,
depending on your Server O/S requirements.

  • Quote B is not right: B). Backup Exec 2012 + 2 x Windows Agent + 1 x Exchange Agent + 1 x SQL Agent (roughly £2,000+) The Exchange and SQL Agent includes the Windows for that server, so you can skip the 2x Windows Agents.
  • A single license of Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition provides total backup and recovery protection for one server including application protection for SQL, Exchange, Hyper-V, SharePoint and Active Directory. Each license can be easily expanded to support up to 3 servers (2 remote servers) by purchasing an additional Agent for Windows for Small Business Edition, Agent for Linux or Agent for Mac, depending on your Server O/S requirements. According to the Backup Exec 2012 Small Business Edition Solution Brief on this page: http://www.symantec.com/products/datasheets.jsp?pcid=pcat_business_cont&pvid=296_1 So it depends on where your Media server will be located (media server is where the backup software itself runs). If it is one of these servers, you will need 1 extra agent license.
  • You can purchase only Agent for Windows for Small Business Edition, Agent for Linux or Agent for Mac, Agent for Windows, Agent for Windows with Small Business Edition. No other licenses are available. Which means 1 X SQL? is not possible and not required as SBS edition includes this.

  • Hi I plan to run it on the Windows Server 2003 manchine..

  • The you will require 1 BE 20102 small business edition and one small business Edition Agent for Windows. http://www.emea.symantec.com/beguide/en/files/BE2012_customer_license_guide.pdf
  • Hi Thanks. That's what I was hoping. That's a lot more straight forward
