How do I get 1.6 TB from LTO-4 Data Cartridge using Backup Exec 2010 R3
Hi,
I have a HP Storage Works Ultrium 1760 Tape Drive and HP LTO-4 Ultrium RW Data Cartridges (1.6 TB - C7974A). I am running Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3. The tape is showing an "Available capacity" of just less than 800 MB.
The HP specs for the 1760 report that the device is capable of storing 1.6 TB.
Can anyone let me know if there is something I need to do in Backup Exec 2010 R3 to get 1.6 Tb capacity out of my data catridges ?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
Regards
The native (uncompressed) capacity of a LTO4 tape is 800GB. They are often marketed as 1.6TB/800GB. The 1.6TB capacity assumes that your data is capable of being compressed to a 2:1 ratio, so you would be able to cramp 1.6TB of data onto a 800GB tape.
In real life, 1.6TB is hardly achieved. Typically, you would get a 1.2 - 1.3 compression ratio which means that you would get roughly about 1TB of data onto a LTO4 tape.
You need to enable compression in your backup job to get compression.
