Hello. I just got some new servers and we are installing Backup Exec 2012 on them. How do I export the info from our current 2010 servers, catalogs, backup jobs, etc and import them into 2012? I'm mainly concerned with being able to before a Restore on the new server on an old backup job. Thanks.

Since this is basically a migration, check out http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129826 From this TN: NOTE: Backup Exec (BE) is only supported to migrate or move BE to and from the same Windows OS version. The following steps are successful in most cases. However this is a best effort method as the Windows OS change is not supported.

Alternatively, if you run a catalog job on the tape, this will also import details into the BEDB, allowing you to perform restores.

Is there anything else I have to do to allow me to perform Restores?

So I can just hook the 2012 server up to the tape library, run a catalog job on the tapes or copy the files over as in the TN, and go?

Should I try copying over the backup and restore jobs before or after this?

Well here's a dumb question, but what are you supposed to do then when moving to a new OS? Our old server is on Windows 2003 and we are now on Windows 2008R2. I have no problems recreating backup jobs, but in the case on an OS version change, what is the recommended action to take to Restore old backup jobs, as in over a year ago?

Hang on here...do you want to migrate to a new server? This is entirely possible. You'd do the following on a simplistic basis:

1. Install BE 2010 Rx on your new server.

2. Follow the TN below to migrate to another server:

3. Upgrade to BE 2012, and install SP1a.

That's it. I've done the same tasks moving from Win2K3 to Win2K8 R2 with no hassles, except for the upgrade as that hasn't been done yet!

CraigV - are you sure that's ok? It states to not do it if - "The computer where Backup Exec is installed and the computer where it will be installed are running two different versions of the Windows Operating System."

I'd like to do it fresh if possible.

Is it possible to setup a new server and still be able to perform Restore jobs from backups taken on an old server with a different Backup Exec version?

Yes, it is possible...As advised earlier, import the catalogs to the new server.

Hi,

The TN mentioned by Ken Putnam (TN TECH129826) actually describes about migrating between different windows versions. You can follow the advice given by Craig along with this TN...

And i have done the migration (migrate to same version of BE then upgrade, between my test VMs) between different operating system versions and it worked for me.

...like I said, I've moved from Win2K3 to Win2K8 and then installed BE 2010 R3 and pulled the data back. No hassles, and it works well.
