Installation/Licensing confusion Backup Exec 2014

Hello All

We have purcased 5 2008 servers to rollout to remote sites over slow WAN link.  Each server has it's own locally atached LTO drive and is running 2008 R2.  When enquiring about Backup exec we were sold 1 x Backup Exec 2014 and 4 x backup Exec 2014 Agent for Windows. Whereas I am happy that backups can be administered from head office it is key that each server can backup independently i.e. using it's own tape drive.  Is this possible with the Agents?  Just came to install this and didn't seem to be able to add agent on it's own as another serial number was required.

Sorry if I'm a bit vague but I have been using NTbackup for years (don't laugh) and there's a bit of a steep learning curve....Done a bit of Googling and struggling to find exact answers.

Hope you can help and grateful for any suggestions.

Kind regards

Sean

  •  Whereas I am happy that backups can be administered from head office it is key that each server can backup independently i.e. using it's own tape drive.  Is this possible with the Agents?

This is not possible with the Remote Agent. Tape drives can be attached only to the Media server

(where core BE product is installed). You will need 1 BE core product licene for each server to backup

    to its local tape drive.

  • The remote agent will not do.  To backup the remote servers to their locally attached tape drives, you need to install BE 2014 on all these remote servers.

To administer them, you can either use a BE remote console to connect to each of these servers, or buy the Enterprise Server Option (ESO) which will have the Central Administration Server Option (CASO) which allows you to administer all the servers from a single console.

  • Thank you for your speedy reply, even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear :o(

So is the remote Windows agent used when backing up files from a remote server to a central server?

Are you aware if Windows remote agents licenses can be upgraded to full version?

    Thansk again.

  • ...not sure how you can upgrade a remote agent to a full BE license as they are essentially 2 different things. You would need to purchase a new media server license, but once you install it on that remote server, you would be able to decomission that RAWS agent, or use it elsewhere.

    Thanks!
