Installing Backup Exec for Windows Small Business Server

I'm just about to install Backup Exec for Windows Small Business Server onto a new machine that will be running Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard.  This will replace an older server running SBS 2008.

The current installation (SBS 2008) also has BEWS, Trend Worry Free, and a few other programs installed and I'm wondering how much these additional programs are slowing down the server.

Does Backup Exec for Windows Small Business Server have to be installed on the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard itself, or can it be installed on another server with is joined to the domain?

If it can be installed elsewhere, is that a better option than installing on the SBS box?

Many thanks.

  • The only benefit of installing BE on a SBS server is licensing cost. BE for SBS is bundled license

which has Agent for SQL, Exchange, Sharepoint and 75 DLO license and its costs less then a

regular license of BE. Below is the compatibility list of BE2010R3, you may check the OS compatibility.

Note: SBS 2011 is compatible only with BE2010 R3

  • BE SBS edition has to be installed in a machine running the SBS 2011.  There is a check.

If SBS 2011 is running in a Hyper-V VM, then you can install BE SBS in the host.
