Log folder for Backup Exec 2012 server is 25 GB

I have Symantec Backup Exec 2012 (Version 14.0) on Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit.

Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Logs

Logs folder is taking 25 GB space can we delete those files (.XML and .txt ) to save the space ??

  • Hi,

By default BE maintains catalogs for 90 days. Check to see how long you are keeping your catalogs for.

Ideally BE will be pruning those logs, but if delete them, you need to recatalog your tapes again before restoring data.

    Thanks!

  • If the .log files have the BE server name as a prefix, those are probably debug logs. You can safely delete them and do ensure CreateDebugLog value is set to 0 in the registry (HKLM\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Logging)

  • First of all check which files are actually consuming the space.

In addition to what VJware said, if you have a CatError.log file that's big and growing, maybe you have the same problem I described in https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/enormous-file-caterrorlog .

Do not randomly delete files from the Logs folder. Specifically, leave the XML files alone. They should be small anyway.
