low backup speed on windows server 2016 with windows deduplication enabled

Hi there,

we have an issue on windows server 2016. The sever has 3 raid 6 volumes, system, data and backup. After enabling deduplication on the data partition backup speed dropped from 4.2 GB/min to 2.6 GB/min (LTO6). Testing with simple filecopy between data and backup partition don't show such a significant decrease.

The server is under lab conditions, no users connected. The is no third party virus protection or software just windows server 2016, backupexec 16 an 1 TB data for testing.

Any suggestions?

thanks
Andy

  • Hi,

Remember when backing up deduped data it rehydrates. This extends the backup time. It's no different to duplicating backups from an array such as a Data Domain or StoreOnce to tape. Your speed will drop as data is rehydrated during the move to tape.

    Thanks!

      Hello Craig,

thanks for your reply. We expected a lower backup speed because rehydrating but 50% seems to be to much. And why don't we see this drop during simple filecopy from a dedubed volume to no dedubed volume, there rehydrating will also occur.

      thanks
