Low Virtual Memory

We are receiving the following error when we try to run a backup of the Information Store in Exchange 2003

e0008442 - A memory allocation request failed. The computer may be running low on virtual memory.
For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33858

We have tried increasing the virtual memory and turned off advanced open file with no luck. We are on version 13 of Backup Exec.

  • What are the specifications of the server ?
Exchange will try to get as much memory as possible. Offcourse it also depends on the load and number of mailboxes.

  • Is this on the Media Server or the Exchange Server?  or are they the same box?

How much RAM is in the affected server?

  • If you are sure that there are very few processes running and you get a low virtual memory message, this means that there is a memory leak somewhere in the OS.  I hate to say this, but short of an OS re-load, it is quite difficult to fix the memory leak.

  • The server is running 2003 SP2 on a Xeon 3.06GHz with 4GB Ram. BackupExec and Exchange are on the same server. Exchange is eating up a little more that 1GB. The mailbox file is roughly 80GB which only leaves 30GB free.

  • Rather than just going straight to a rebuild of the machine, you can use Task Manager or some other utility to determine what process is using all the Memory and try fixing that

Are you on the latest build of your version of BE with all current service applied?
