LTO5 incompatible media error

Im on Backup Exec 2010 and have put in 2 LTO5 tapes done an inventory for them, and get the following error message.

Incompatible media has been detected in the slot. The most likely causes for this error are: The library or tape drive hardware is reporting an incompatible media error, or the library has bar code rules enabled and a bar code rule does not exist for the bar code in the slot, or there is no tape drive in the library that is compatible with the media in the slot as specified by the matching bar code rule.

Can someone, if possible guide me through the steps if any to resolve this issue, as the the 2 LTO5 tapes have been scanned as the barcode shows up in there revelant slot numbers.

  • An IBM ULT3580-TD4 is an LTO4 drive, it cannot read/write LTO5 tapes !

  • An IBM ULT3580-TD4 is an LTO4 drive, it cannot read/write LTO5 tapes !

  • Sorry my mistake. I interchanged drive and media in my earlier statement..

I wanted to say "LTO 5 media can be read and written by LTO 5 drive only."

    Thanks Zerocool...

  • Been onto symantec support, and what they have done is change the driver to a symantec one from a microsoft one, and instructed me to upgrade to backexec 2010 r2.

The dell website lists the Powervault TL2000 compatible with LTO5 tapes

    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/tbu_auto_comp.pdf

But than reading more it seems that you require it to be configured with LTO5

Probable config i have now (one of these)

1 LTO4 3Gb SAS Full Height Drive with 24 Slots
    1 LTO4 FC4 Full Height Drive with 24 Slots
    1 or 2 LTO4 3Gb SAS Half Height Drive(s) with 24 Slots

    Required Config (one of these)

    1 or 2 LTO5 6Gb SAS Drive(s) with 24 Slots
    1 or 2 LTO5 FC8 Drive(s) with 24 Slots

Ill just upgrade it today, and may thanresort back to using LTO4 tapes

  • Correct, as I stated before, the unit can contain an LTO4 drive or an LTO5 drive.

Based on your statement about the IBM ULT3580-TD4 drive, you have an LTO4 drive and therefore unable to use LTO5 tapes.

Just try some LTO4 tapes and make sure to put LTO4 barcode labels on it !!
