Management Media

Hi everybody!

How can I manage medias on BE2012? Example, look my scenario on BE2010:

I had 18 partitions in my tape library:
Partition1 - Slot1 - Slot2; - MON - DIF
Partition2 - Slot3 - Slot4; - TUE - DIF
Partition3 - Slot5 - Slot6; - WED - DIF
Partition4 - Slot7 - Slot8; - THU - DIF
Partition5 - Slot9 - Slot10; - FRI - DIF
Partition6 - Slot11 - Slot16; - SAT - FULL
Partition7 - Slot17 - Slot18; - MON - DIF
Partition8 - Slot19 - Slot20; - TUE - DIF
Partition9 - Slot21 - Slot22; - WED - DIF
Partition10 - Slot23 - Slot24; - THU - DIF
Partition11 - Slot25 - Slot26; - FRI - DIF
Partition12 - Slot27 - Slot32; - SAT - FULL
Partition13 - Slot33 - Slot34; - MON - DIF
Partition14 - Slot35 - Slot36; - TUE - DIF
Partition15 - Slot37 - Slot38; - WED - DIF
Partition16 - Slot39 - Slot40; - THU - DIF
Partition17 - Slot41 - Slot42; - FRI - DIF
Partition18 - Slot43 - Slot48; - SAT - FULL

So I could to put 48 medias and to do the backup for 3 weeks without changing the tape library.

Now look my jobs:

Backup WEEK 01 FULL (SAT - use 6 medias); - Media Set => WEEK01FULL (Partition6 - Slot11 - Slot16)
Backup WEEK 01 MON-DIF (MON - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK01MON (Partition1 - Slot1 - Slot2; - MON - DIF)
Backup WEEK 01 TUE-DIF (TUE - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK01TUE (Partition2 - Slot3 - Slot4; - TUE - DIF)
Backup WEEK 01 WED-DIF (WED - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK01WED (Partition3 - Slot5 - Slot6; - WED - DIF)
Backup WEEK 01 THU-DIF (THU - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK01THU (Partition4 - Slot7 - Slot8; - THU - DIF)
Backup WEEK 01 FRI-DIF (FRI - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK01FRI (Partition5 - Slot9 - Slot10; - FRI - DIF)
Backup WEEK 02 FULL (SAT - use 6 medias); - Media Set => WEEK02FULL (Partition12 - Slot27 - Slot32; - SAT - FULL)
Backup WEEK 02 MON-DIF (MON - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK02MON (Partition7 - Slot17 - Slot18; - MON - DIF)
Backup WEEK 02 TUE-DIF (TUE - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK02TUE (Partition8 - Slot19 - Slot20; - TUE - DIF)
Backup WEEK 02 WED-DIF (WED - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK02WED (Partition9 - Slot21 - Slot22; - WED - DIF)
Backup WEEK 02 THU-DIF (THU - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK02THU (Partition10 - Slot23 - Slot24; - THU - DIF)
Backup WEEK 02 FRI-DIF (FRI - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK02FRI (Partition11 - Slot25 - Slot26; - FRI - DIF)
...
Backup WEEK 25 FULL (SAT - use 6 medias); - Media Set => WEEK25FULL
Backup WEEK 25 MON-DIF (MON - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK25MON
Backup WEEK 25 TUE-DIF (TUE - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK25TUE
Backup WEEK 25 WED-DIF (WED - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK25WED
Backup WEEK 25 THU-DIF (THU - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK25THU
Backup WEEK 01 FRI-DIF (FRI - use 2 medias); - Media Set => WEEK25FRI

Now on BE2012 I can´t to do this. I can´t to manage the medias and create a backup as BE2010.

Look the scenario on BE2012:

Jobs:

Backup Virtual Machines
 ->FULL (Media Set: Backup Full / Partition6 - Slot11 - Slot16)
 ->DIFF (Media Set: Backup Diff / Partition1 - Slot1 - Slot2)
Backup Physical Machines
 ->FULL (Media Set: Backup Full / Partition6 - Slot11 - Slot16)
 ->DIFF (Media Set: Backup Diff / Partition1 - Slot1 - Slot2)
Backup  File Servers
 ->FULL (Media Set: Backup Full / Partition6 - Slot11 - Slot16)
 ->DIFF (Media Set: Backup Diff / Partition1 - Slot1 - Slot2)

The problem that is that I need to put everyday the media in tape library.

Somebody Could I help me with a strategy as BE2010?

    I belive that I found the solution for my problems.

    Look what I did:

    I created many Differencial Backups and Full, example:

    Backup File Servers
     -> FULL - WEEK01 (Media set: WEEK01FULL / Partition6 - Slot11 - Slot16)
     -> DIFF MON - WEEK01 (Media set: WEEK01MON / Partition1 - Slot1 - Slot2)
     -> DIFF TUE - WEEK01  (Media set: WEEK01TUE / Partition2 - Slot3 - Slot4)
    ...

    I added more methods in my job. Did you understand?

    Advice is not to try micromanaging media usage.

    You purchased a backup software and a tape library. Let them do that for you. Especially when you have a 48 slot library you are good to limit yourself to barcode medias,create media sets meeting retention requirements, assigning media sets with backup jobs and scheduling them to run.

    If you want a media to be used only for one day, use 0 hours Append period with media sets. Do not assign any medias to mediasets manually. Let them be in SCRATCH set.

    And finally if you still want to use partitions in the same way,

    You wrote "Backup Virtual machines and physical machines". At present there is no way to backup more than one server with one job, i.e you might be having more number of jobs. If so, have you assigned same media set with all jobs targetted at one partition?

    The problem of to use only one partition is that the job backup take any media, example:

    On slot 1 and slot2 I have the follow medias:
    WEEK01MON-DIF

    On slot3 and slot4 I have the follow medias:
    WEEK01TUE-DIF

    When the job start I don´t know if the job will take de correct media. It´s the big problem.

    You means to say you labeled the media physically in that manner?

    Kiran, I need to have a sequence... because everyday I send the media for other place. Then, I can´t to changing the label (physically) everyday.

    In BE2010 I used perfectly but now It´s so terrible. I Can´t to do my backups. sad

    The company wants to change the software.

    ...I use partitions...each to their own really. My view isn't the same as Kiran's who simply posted pkh's pretty good article on this.

    I've never had an issue with it. Not with my media sets, not with my management (31 sites with autoloader/libraries!), not with my backups. The site reps knew which slots they'd need to remove tapes from on specific days I had set them to do this on, so it worked well. If that is what you need, and it has worked for you, good stuff. It's going to be hard for someone else to convince you otherwise.

    That said, there is a Beta for BE 2012 R2 in progress...do a search on the forums for it and join it.

    Otherwise, go to the Ideas section and add what you'd like in as an idea...enough votes might see it implemented in future. There is always the option to downgrade back to BE 2010 R3, BUT...then you run the risk of losing functionality to backup new software on release...
