Media Rotation

Hi all ,

Hi I have HP Autoloader MSL 2024 that takes 22 tapes , i setup a full weekly jobs with 5 mailslots/5 tapes for one month retension (OPP:4 weeks, append period :infinite).

I'm configuring the media management setting to "Overwrite recyclable media in the target media set before overwriting scratch media",also the amount data of each job take about 90% of the tape (NDMP protocol).

My question is how to setup BE to use seperate tape for each weekly job,in order to keep the period retention for one month.

Thanks.

  • Use the option Overwrite Media in job settings instead of append to media. In this case all your tapes have OPP of 4 weeks so they will not be overwritten and as we have not selected append to media, Backup Exec will pick scratch or overwritable tape to write. Hence every time a seperate tape will be used .

    Thanks

  • Good idea, but in this case how i will configure the append period?

  • Set the AP to 1 hour so that you do not accidentally append to the tape
  • .You can configure 2 partitions. One for your full backup, where tapes will be used for only for overwrite and another partition where you can keep tapes for incremental and on those jobs you can select append to media;overwrite when no appendable media available. These settings will serve both your purpose.

    Thanks

  • How did incremental jobs come into the picture?
  • He mentioned in his first comment that he is using Weekly Full so I assume he is running a incremental or differential backups daily.

    Thanks

  • No. There is no requirement to do daily backups. Some installations are perfectly happy with weekly backups. Also your answer does not have any bearing on the user's s question
  • Exactly Rahul,

I have two partitions one with five slots for Weekly full backup (one tape per Week) for 1 month retention.

Yesterday i have configured the option Overwrite Media in job settings like you suggest ,and i have done several test ,the result is perfect for me (each time weekly job will pick scratch or overwrite from the partition).

I also use the second partion with two tapes for differential bacups daily but with append to media;overwrite when no appendable media available option (and Infinite allow append period).

    Thanks
