Hi I am having an issue with backup exec 2010r2. It is missing a file from my dedupe data folder called 5025.bin and will not allow me to do any backups any more. We had a disk fail in the iSCSI target system which has RAID 5+1 and it automatically used the spare in the raid configuration to rebuild. There is no virus scanner installed on the system that is connected to the iSCSI target. I am running a program called R-Studio to see if I can undelete the file but it hasn't found it yet. How can I get this dedupe storage folder back online without this file?

Hi yeah I raised the sevarity. It was going to take many hours for them to research this. Basically the previous tech stated that this iSCSI target will probably need to be reformatted. I ran out of time and had to reformat it. It works fine now. The iSCSI target lost too much data when the RAID 5 failed (it only kicked out one drive but since "caching" was enabled, so it messed up too many files while it was in the middle of a write.) Anyway this is resolved now. We have caching turned off on the iSCSI host system. The worst part is this system is filled with Seagate drives so everyone knows what that means.

How is this going to help the user? He already said that he does not have an anti-virus on his machine.

What error do you receive when you try to start the spoold (backup exec deduplication engine) service ?

I felt the above document is relevant reading the following point

"When no antivirus software is used on the client side, the potential exists that backups made from those clients may contain files with virus signatures. In such cases, it is possible that it will end up in the Deduplication Storage Folder files where it could match a signature to any antivirus software running on that media server."

Dear PKH you need to understad that this is public forum and anyone can post their comments and it does not necessarily mean that it would be correct all the times . If you have any issue please send PM. You dont have to mark others down to prove you are good .

However, the OP did mention he didn't have an AV, so in this case posting a link which mentions the AV as the problem is kind of a moot point.

It might be a public forum, but the idea behind it is to provide relevant information that helps...not just to post, and part of that is reading what is mentioned in the original query, or what others have posted in past comments so that the same thing is not repeated again.

Ok I had one service that wasn't started although it is set to automatic. now I get the error message that I was looking for

spoold --trace

missing container file 5025.bin

and some other text. I'm having a lot of difficulty pasting text from the server to here.

So although this spoold command works, it isn't really helping resolve this issue. I'm at a loss here, as to why the file is even gone to begin with. The only thing I can think of is just starting all over from scratch but then how will I retreive backups when doing that?

The reason why you lost files even though you have a RAID drive is that the RAID cache is probably no good. Whatever is in the cache is not written out to the disk before it failed and the cache did not have this information when you plug in the new disk. I had this double whammy once and have a devil of a time recovering my disk. You should run a drive diagnostic and check that the drive cache is o.k.

You should also disable the RAID cache as per the best practices below.

If I run a drive check, what do I do with it afterwards? AFAIK, a tech took the drive out of the Synology appliance already and replaced it with a blank one and set that as spare.

I did not configure the RAID so I am uncertain if the RAID cache is on or not so I will have to log into that server and take a look. However I'm unsure how to recover from this so I'm going to have to get back to tech support and see.

Well they had me upgrade to 2010r3 and I did all the updates. Now I can't get spoold --trace to tell me which file it was missing but at least spoold doesn't blatantly crash on me now so that is fine.

Ok so spoold --trace is giving me irrelevant information as to it cannot connect to the server. I'm on the server.

Anyways. I am getting the error Deduplication Storage Folder 001 - Offline

If I put it online, inventory fails, test run fails, full backup incremental backups fail fail. So I'm going to try to find the tech support number again and see what the status of my case is. I'm pretty much out of options here and I have no idea why this happened just due to a drive failing in the iSCSI target. It is raid 5+1! It lost some files. But how. I haven't seen this happen before.

If the drive diagnostic shows that the RAID array cache is no good, then you need to get it replaced. This is in case you want to use the array for something else that would need the cache on for good performance. Mine got replaced twice before it is o.k. Note that replacing the cache would not have any impact on your file recovery. This is for the future.
