Mount Failed

Ok I know you have all seen this error 200 times but I am at a loss. I am using Backup Exec 2010 R2. I have a job that is a full back up that occurs nightly at 9 pm.  The job runs for 3 min and 26 seconds (or 27 seconds) and then a Drive and media mount is requested.  After 2 hours the job is cancelled by the alret response.  The media is saved for 1 week and the tapes are use only on the same day (a monday tape, a tuesday tape, and so on.)

The tapes are big enough.  I have tried new tapes with no luck. I don't think it is an issue with Overwrite protection because the job only runs for 3 min and then it asks for a media insert.  Could the drive be going dead?  We have a Ultrium 920 tape drive that we are using.  I have also tried cleaning the drive a number of times with a fresh clean tape.

The odd thing is that on some days the backups run and then others they don't.  I kept track over the course of a few weeks and it isn't a single tape that is failing.  One week Monday will run and the next it won't but then the week after it will.  Same goes for all the other days.  Any help would be great.

Thanks

  • O I am an idiot!  I went through and inventoried 3 of the tapes.  Some one went through and relabled all of the tapes.....with the some of the tapes mislabeld for the right day. So the tapes were still write protected.  This is why when we would wait and the week would pass with fails the next week would work.  Appreciate everyones help and ideas.

All my worries and it's someone made a labeling mistake...sigh.

  • 1) Check the alerts tab for any active alert

    2) Check the Windows Event viewer (system log) for any errors related to hardware.

    3) Make sure Symantec drivers are installed for the device.

  • You can try the following

    1. Create media set with 6 days overwrite protection and one day append (or 0 day append) .This way once the backup is done the media is protected for 6 days right from the time when the backup is complete and on the 7th day media can be overwritten .

    2. Configure the backup to always overwrite, because if you have configured a backup to append if no appendable media found then overwrite  what ti would do is append some data and then prompt you for new tape.

Let me know if this helps

  • ...best way to check whether or not it is a hardware problem is to get hold of your drive manufacturer's hardware utility. Stop the BE services, and then run the diagnostics.

HP for example have LTT (Library and Tape Tools)...this will give you an indication.

Do you get the same issue when writing a random job to tape of a couple of GBs? If so, I'd put it down to hardware that is busy failing...
