Moving BackupExec to another server

Hi, I am currently using Backup Exec v12.5 and we have a need to rebuild the server. The Symantec KB 319367 mentions that moving between server with two different versions of the Windows Operating system is not supported. I am sure, from Windows 2003 to 2008 will be the case. How about from Windows2003(SP1) to Windows2003 R2(SP2)? Would somebody know? Thanks in advance. Regards David

To be honest I am not 100% sure why it won't work between 2003 and 2008 - as it does work to change the versions of SQL holding the database and you don't copy the program binaries etc - just the database, catalogs and b2d folders. Although if your 2008 server is the R2 revision then you won't be able to do it with 12.5

As an asixde, you can also combine the KB you mention with http://support.veritas.com/docs/287063 - in order to upgrade backup exec to a newer version at the same time - by using the KB I just supplied but installing the newer version of Backup Exec onto the new server and then after section IV step 5 (and before you restart the services in step 6) to upgrade the database schema.  Although the other option to do this would be to install the same version of BE on your new server, do the migration and then do an inplace upgrade afterwards.

I recently took a 9.1 installation on WIndows 32 bit Windows 2000 to 12.5 on a new 64 bit 2003 server using those 2 documents - did have to upgrade the 9.1 server to 11D 32 bit first (more than 2 versions behind)

  • Thanks Colin for your quick and detailed response. The new KB will come in very handy later for me as this server will be moving to Win 2008 end of this year. I have gone through the same path one year back by upgrading the BE v9.1 to v12.5 as we bought a new LTO4 library. Although it is a pain to upgrade to 11d then v12.5 but it works. ;-)

I Did learn soemthing new from you. Thanks again.
