New File Server In BE2010.

Hi all,

I have a new file server . I want to add some data from that server to Backup server.

How it would work ? do i need to buy an agent or i can just share some folders without agent icense from that File server.

As i cannot see That server in the Selection of resources in selction list tab.

  • Sush...here is the document, and you're actually wrong. You're supposed to be stating that the backing up of a WINDOWS server WITHOUT the RAWS agent is unsupported by Symantec. You're opening the company up to a lot of rubbish by stating that StockholmGuy can actually do so.

The TN below explains that the only devices that support being backed up WITHOUT an agent are SNAP and NAS devices...

@pkh...this is probably the document you were looking for, although there is a licensing document I have somewhere...I'll try finding it for you.

  • Hi,

First things first...you need to purchase a Remote Agent for Windows Servers license. Once done, do a push-install from your media server to that server. The license is just a paper number, but you need to have it.

Once the agent is installed, open up your selection list and browse to that server. You can then select what you need on your server that needs to be backed up.

    Thanks!

  • If you do not want to protect that remote server completely like for Disaster recovery but want to just backup few data from it then you can backup without the License too.

Just make the Folder which needs to be backed up as Share folder.

Then in Backup Exec selection list right click on User Defnied Share and Add the remote server name or IP address.

Ones the server is added in the selection list you will be able to select and backup the Shared folder from that server.

So there is no need to install any license or install any agent on the remote server.

But remember this will not protect your server from disaster. It will just backup those selected Shared folders.

    Thanks,

This is not what I have been given to understand.  I was told that as long as you are backing up a remote server or device, regardless of the amount of data to be backed up, you need to have a remote agent licence.  Can you provide some documentation to backup your statement?

  • I just could not find the exact document from Symantec over this. But the best way for you is to test it out yourself and see it works and it is AS PER THE DESIGN. You do not require a Remote Agent License to backup the Shared Folders from the remote server and nor the remote agent needs to be installed.

Also I actually do not mean the size of data while referring to "amount of data to be backed up"... I am referring to the resources. Like you will not be able to backup the System State, shadow Copy component, etc if the Remote agent is not present on the remote server. So backing just the Shared folder is not good for the Disaster Recovery of the server.

Also I just missed to inform that the option to "Enable selection of user shares" should be selected. To make this option enable go to :

Tools >> Options >> Network and Security >> "Enable selection of user shares"

Do let me know if you have any further queries.

  • BE does not stop you from backing up a shared directory on another server/NAS without installing a licence on the media server, but from a legal standpoint, you still need a RAWS licence to do.  You must be clear about what can be done technically and what needs to be done on a legal standpoint.  Without making that distinction, a lot of users are going to backup shared directories without licences and they are going to quote you when the lawyers come a-calling.

  • ...as a Symantec employee, should you even be advocating backing up a server WITHOUT the use of a RAWS agent...??? THat opens the OP up to a number of issues if they cannot restore their data by following a "cheap fix"...
