New Problem :Access Denied Failures When Backing Up Exchange 2003 Mailboxes

We have been successfully backing up Exchange 2003 mailboxes until recently. I suspect it is related to patching our Exchange server or our Windows 2000 domain controller. We are experiencing Access Denied failures on several messages in various folders in mailboxes. Backup Exec is installed on our Windows 2000 domain controller.

Any help with what might be the cause would be appreciated.

  • Hello,

Since when does the probelm occur? What account are you using to backup Exchange? It should have domain admin rights, its own unique mailbox, it should also possess Exchange Full admin rights. Make sure that it is not hidden from the Global address list.

If the issue persists, revert with the account rights related information. Also paste the exact error message you get.

    Refer to the following technotes:

    http://support.veritas.com/docs/273168

The message "Access is denied" appears next to individual messages during Microsoft Exchange 2003 mailbox backups.

  • We had been successfully backing up the mailboxes until recently so I'm pretty sure it's not a rights issue with our Backup Exec service account.

We were receving the application error as described in http://support.veritas.com/docs/267692 but I had modified the registry as described in the article & the application error went away.

Here is a sampling of the error messages:

Access denied to file <>?Top of Information Store?Calendar?walk in project.
Access denied to file <>?Top of Information Store?Calendar?Solid edge expectations.
Access denied to file <>?Top of Information Store?Calendar?New Arabidpsis chamber.
Access denied to file <>?Top of Information Store?Calendar?Eng. Issues..
Access denied to file <>?Top of Information Store?Calendar?SOGETI SOFTWARE TELECONF..
Access denied to file <>?Top of Information Store?Calendar?Series 22 chamber.
Access denied to file <>?Top of Information Store?Calendar?Series 22.
Access denied to file <>?Top of Information Store?Calendar?ISO 9001 Eng. Issues

These messages are typical for several, but not all of our users. It appears that all of the messages originate from calendar items, but I can't be for sure.
  • We have also the above mentioned problem with nearly the same error messages.

At first we had error messages as inserted below:

Access denied to file <>Top of Information StoreCalendar<>.
    The item \\<>\Microsoft Exchange Mailboxes\<>Top of Information StoreCalendar <>in use - skipped.

After a stop and restart of the backup exec services from the backup exec program only the "access denied" error remained.

The error messages definitely are all only about calendar items and nothing else.

This all happened after a reboot due to a Groupshield-Service problem. The Groupshield Service couldn't start and a reboot was unavoidable. Before we never had problems like this and none of the KB-articles mentioned above from the symantec-employee matches with our problems.
  • Hello Kurt,

    - Can you acces the calenders of the users from the outlook?

    - Is any Antivirus running?
