Odd problem with media set

Hi Everyone,

I have a bit of a weird problem. I have a Windows 2000 Server, running 9.0 in a production environment. Everything used to work as expected. I haev one configured media set, with 7 tapes in it. Daily we perform a full backup to that media set (one tape for each day of the week). This worked great.

Now... the only way to get the backup to not fail is to move the tape you plan to use to the scratch media pool, then run the backup.

I must be missing something simple, but nothing was changed... any thoughts?

  • What is the overwrite protection for the media set?
Does the backup now last past mid-night, whereas before it would complete before?

If so, change your overwrite period to one day less. eg, 6 days rather than 7
  • Hi Ken,

We apologise for the inconvenience caused because of the delayed response. Please let us know if your issue / problem is resolved so that we can mark this case as ‘assumed answered’ and move it to ‘answered threads’ pool. However, if the issues still persist then refer to the steps mentioned below:

If you need to reuse a tape after 1 week, and the job is set to overwrite tapes, check this option in Backup Exec:
Tools > Options > Media management > overwrite recyclable media before scratch.
You can set the Overwrite Protection to 6 days. This is assuming that a tape would not be touched for backup for until the same day next week.

    We hope that helps you!

NOTE : If we do not receive your intimation within two business days, this post would be marked ‘assumed answered’ and would be moved to the ‘answered threads’ pool.
