Opinions on BE11 versus BE10

 Hi all,
We currently are using Backup Exec 10.  We are getting an exchange server, so we need to buy more licenses.  Obviously, we have to buy a license of 11 (but I was told that we could downgrade to 10 so that our backup solution was uniform).  The other option is to upgrade the other servers to 11.
So my question is, is there any reason to not upgrade (other than the money)?  Are there any problems with 11 that 10 doesn't have?

  • 11d Supports Exchange 2007 10d doesnt.
11d Supports Vista, Sharepoint 2007 and few other options.
11d adds Exchange GRT Granual Restore option to restore email from Information Store backups. No need to backup brick level if you use GRT which cuts down on backup time and tape space.
GRT restore take longer but thats a trade off.
There are consideration when using GRT option such as disk space required on the media server.  You dont have to use the GRT option in 11d you can backup the mailboxes via brick level as in 10d.  Exchange 2007 doesnt offer brick level mailbox backup and GRT is the only option
    Hope this helps

  • Hi Kabeerk,

Backup Exec 11D is End-of-Life, and I would suggest upgrading to Backup Exec 12.5 as that is currently the latest and greatest.
You can get it from here:

    https://www4.symantec.com/Vrt/offer?a_id=51791

BEWS 12.5 is far better than 11D, and hence 10...there is far greater support for newer applications than the other 2 have, and you're able to run this version of BEWS with a 60-day trial license for virtually all the agents.

    Laters!

  • BE10 did not do GRT backups and restores of Exchange, version 11 onwards does. GRT provides you with the ability to do a one pass backup, but restore individual mail items, Prior to GRT you had to do an Information Store backup for DR purposes and a Brick Level (slow) backup to get at individual mailboxes.

Also you say you are 'getting' an Exchnage server but don't mention what version - if it is Exchange 2010 then you will need BE2010 (which is due for release soon). If it is Exchange 2007 then you will need at least 11D with all the service packs.

As mentioned BE 10.x & 11.x are no longer subject to development. 12.5 is the current version which is about to be updated to BE 2010.
