Oracle database backup size seems to small

Hi guys.

I have finally got my oracle database backing up with Backup Exec.

When I browse my selection list, all the databases selected are around 20GB. But if I do a test backup of just the databases, the backup comes up to around 4GB.

Any ideas why? The backup completes successfully.

It is an Oracle database running on a redhat server with the oracle agent.

Perhaps I might do a test restore and see what file sizes they come out to.

  • are you backing up to tape of backup to disk ?
Make sure you have the installed all the patches and hotfixes
    refer the following document http://support.veritas.com/docs/310325
During a backup operation, the amount of data that is backed up may not equal the size of the Oracle files that are on the disk. This behavior is normal. Backup Exec backs up the selected data files as well as a copy of the control file
  • Hi.
We are backing up to tape.
I have everything selected and its only backing up around 4GB, where as the files in the selection is around 20GB which makes me worried.

Will install this patch and see how I go
  • Also check the size on the actual storage location on the server , as the selection list might show inaccurate size ..
And do check what compression you are getting by going to the properties of the tape ...
