OST files are automatically moved to retired media

Hi

I am working on a system where OST-files are automatically moved to retired media just after backup. Even before the verify job can manage to run.

The dedup folder has a low disk space treshold on 15% (Well, I have lovered it to 10%, but nevertheless...the history is more important right now). However, the disk filling is on just 22%, so i don't think that is the clue.

When I try to move the media from retired media and to the B2D-media set, I get two medias with the same ID. One is marked as offline (probably deleted?), the other one is set as "unrecognized media".

I also see that the size of the OST-files are set to 50GB. Isn't that QUITE large? At least when the dedup folder is on 1,36 TB and the treshold is that high?

  • Hi,

Do you have access to internal systems, or are there pages where I can see this information as well? :)

I spoke with Support yesterday afternoon, and they told me that there is an issue with Oracle backups and Deduplication.

The solution is to take backup of Oracle data to another device. i.e. B2D or tape untill this is fixed in later hotfixes or servicepacks (or releases)

  • Hi

Can you lease verify if your backup exec version is BE 2010 or BE 2010 r2 if it is BE 2010 then please upgrade to BE 2010 r2 with sp1 & then check it that helps

Hi Please let me know what type of backup you are doing like Oracle & is it happening with all OST

    Thank You

  • this is BE 2010 R2 (no SP, but several hotfixes: 358289, 140360, 358410, 358288, 138226, 143746, 143981, 145462, 146017).

    Yes, it is Oracle Backup

  • Also I think if you set 15% in the GUI in the background it sets 25% (we are looking to fix this as for some reason we add 10% to whatever you set.)

  • Will do

It might take some time before I have managed to push out new agents and booted the servers so I can test this, but will post back when I have made it.

Colin: What is the lowest number I can set here, and what does support advice? :)

  • Hi

Thanks for your update because I have seen the same issue lot during the Oracle backup in past which were resolved

Will wait for your next update

    Thank You

  • Luckily, the upgrade didn't force a reboot of either the server or the client. (yippi!)

I ran a new backup of the same server, and the media was sent directly to the retired media set.

I see there is an error in the backup job because the database is in NORACHIVELOG mode, and it is open.

    Could this be the reason?

  • backup is now OK (except for Oracle). Tried to remove Oracle selection, since the database isn't in archive mode.

Anyway, OST medias are stilled sent to retired media , and I wonder why. We are talking about OST medias that has just been created.

  • Hi ,

Bjorn when checking about your issue I do see this issue have been seen by backupexec team & they have created etrack for this issue & no workaround available or no updates about when this issue would be fixed

May be you need to call support on number 18006344747 to check on this

If this information was helpful please mark this solved so that we can close the thread

    Thank You
