Problems with backup taking too long and not finishing.

Hi all,

I am just posting looking for advise with an issue we have been having for a while, backup exec isn’t backing up on a server of ours.

We have replaced the tape, used a cleaning tape but we can’t seem to fix the issue we are having with backup's. The backup will take hours and won’t finish unless we cancel it.

The backup before the last one took 365 hours but managed to complete with exceptions.

We are running Windows 2008 if that is any help.

If anyone has any ideas to what could be causing this issue and/or if anyone is experiencing problems similar to this, any help would be appreciated.

Here is a copy of the of the errors in the job log:

Verify- System?State System?StateMedia mount failed.

User canceled a Physical Volume Library operation.

Many Thanks,

Ryan

  • Hi

Please see if there are any pending alerts in the Alerts tab ,Also ensure you have configured to Automatically respond to Alerts

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH49560

Also look for any events in events viewer on Media server and the server you are doing backup of for any error or related events to see if you see any relative information

    Thanks

  • From Tools - Options - Preferences - enable automatically display new alerts...Run the backup job & check at what time is the first alert generated at & what is the alert referring to ?

Could be possible, its prompting to insert an overwritable tape (or a similar alert) & as the alert is not responded to , the backup job remains in such a state.

  • Thank you for the speedy response. You are right it is down to the alerts, recently the issue is that the drive isn’t being detected in the drive:

There is no media in the drive.

I will give you an update whether this is an end user error or a problem with the drive.

    Thank you for your help.

  • The device is appearing and the Tape is in the drive.  It is actually backing up data yet the alerts continue to appear saying there is no media in the drive.

    Regards

  • You should run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility against the tape drive to check for hardware errors.  Make sure that you select the write test and that you have stopped all the BE services beforehand.

  • This can be expected behavior...For egs, if the backup job has completed writing to the tape & if there is more data to be written, it will prompt for an overwritable tape...If this is not present, it will give an alert about no media in the drive.
