RALUS download and difference between RALUS and RMAL

I am using Backup Exec 2010 trial version. I want to take backup of Linux server and for that RALUS (Remote Agent for Linux or Unix Server) is required. My storage device is connected with Windows 2003 Server.

I am little-bit confused about the agent called "Remote Media Agent for Linux" which is available along with the Backup Exec 2010 software. Could you please explain me the difference between RALUS and RMAL (Remote Media Agent for Linux)?

In this scenario it will be very helpful if you could give me the link to download RALUS.
  • Yes in BE 2010 the tar.gz file you found under LinuxUnixMac is the installer - make sure you do not extract the tar.gz file on a Windows system as sometimes this causes problems - so it should be extracted on the linux based host.

To explain the basic difference betwwen RALUS and RMAL

RALUS is a standard remote agent where your backup devices (backup-to-disk or tape) are connecetd to your Windows Media Server

RMAL includes the (RALUS) remote agent but allows you to connect your tape device directly to your linux based system. It can also be used to create a virtual device that uses disk storage attached to the Lunix system instead of tape

As such you don't need to install both just whicever one matches your backup storage device requirements.

Note: make sure you read the software compatibility lists as I believe that RMAL is not supported on every operating system that RALUS is supported on.

  • Both are extra cost options

Backup Exec Remote Media Agent for Linux Server

The Backup Exec 2010 Remote Media Agent for Linux Servers provides new storage flexibility for Linux servers running in a Backup Exec for Windows Server environment. Now IT administrators can directly attach a storage device to a remote Linux server providing added flexibility and reduced bandwidth requirements for backup jobs on remote Linux servers. Each Remote Medias Agent for Linux Servers would include a Remote Agent for Linux Servers and all media server job configurations

As for a download link, there is no separate download.  The code is included in the standard BE 2010 download.  Serials just turn on the functionality.  See

  • Is the file called "RALUS_RMALS_RAMS-2896.9.tar.gz" present under the <Backup Exec 2010 DVD drive>\LinuxUnixMac used for installation of RALUS agent?

Do I need to install both "Remote Media Agent for Linux Servers" and RALUS (Remote Agent for Linux or Unix Server) on the Linux server?

  • Hi Colin,

Thanks for your reply. So in our scenario where backup devices attached with Windows server, I need only RALUS, not RMAL. Please confirm me.
