Re: Backup Storage Appliance

***** Moved to new discussion from  https://vox.veritas.com/t5/Backup-Exec/Backup-Storage-Appliance/m-p/749695   *****

Do you know if with the storage appliance which connected the the backup server, does Symantec Backup Exec require a license for it? I know it does with my Tape Library which is connected to my backup server and I backed up my data to the tapes.

My delima right now is i want to get rid of the tape technology completely.  However, I have backed-up data on the tapes that I need to keep.  My plan is that I will restore the data from the tape to the storage array first and then i can get rid of my backup tapes and the library completely.   I wonder if I need to buy 2 backup licenses, one for the tape library and 1 for storage appliance.  Basically i want to keep the backed-up data on tape, transfer them to disk, get rid of the tape technology. It doesn't have to be storage appliance as alternative solution, it can be anything, but tape.

Any suggestion on that?

  • If you are considering a supported OST dedupe appliance?
(e.g. Data Domain, Quantum, HP, etc. etc.)

Whether you are adding a 3rd-party OST appliance or adding local or SAN-attached disk storage to configure BE Dedupe feature, all you need is 1 x Deduplication Option License.

If you want to use disk storage without Dedupe technology, there is no additional license needed.

You can find the BE Licensing Guide over here:
