Rename BackupExec2010R3 server hostname and change domain

I am currently involved in a project of migrating a site from one domain to another and with this comes the responsibility of renaming the hostname of the current site's Backup Exec 2010R3 server as well as "unjoinging," this from the old domain and joinging to the new domain. As I have no experience with Backup Exec I have been researching how to do this and have come across some similar posts however the solution links on these seem to be dead such as - To rename server and domain http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH58218 This particular link I found on https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/rename-backupexec-server-and-move-another-domain

Update Configuration for New Media Server Name - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH38988 - also seems useful however from my understanding this is a process run after moving the server.

If anyone would be so kind as to point me in the right direction with regards to this that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

    TECH38988 would be the TN to follow. Change the name and domain of your BE server, and then use the TN to change this within BE.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for the speedy response Craig. Am i correct that this will not do any SQL related changes and I would still need to run the following SQL commands against the BackupExec instance:

                  sp_dropserver <old_name\instancename>;
    GO
    sp_addserver <new_name\instancename>, local;
    GO

    On another note, unfortunately on the current domain BackupExec was installed to use domain\administrator to run all the related services. Whilst I am going to create a specific service account for these can you advise what privileges this account should have.

    If you can redirect me to any TN or documentation I am happy to go through it myself.

    Thanks again

  • Not sure if any of the docs suggest this but if you have any logon accounts and/or encryption keys configured in Backup Exec for restricted, I would change each one to common before you do this change of domain, servername and security credentials. Then if you do have any issues with the definition of the System Logon account and any Service Accounts then you should still be able to get at the configuration of your jobs and use the encryption keys.

  • Hi again guys,

    I seem to have closed this call a little too hastily as Service Backup Exec DLO Administration Service is not responding to the start command.

    APP event log shows:

    Eventid: 50090

    Source: DLOAdminSvcu

    Descritpion: Failed to recover database Error: 0x1F

    Any help or direction would be once again greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Check DLO the admin guide for your version

    There is a

    DLOCommandu -RenameMS

    command mentioned in the 7.0 admin guide just not sure if this applies to the version you have.

    Also for you rinformation this is a community based forum with contributions from a mixture of product users, Symantec partners and Symantec staff which may often get you a valid answer to an issue, however, it is not an official place to log a formal technical support case/call
