Replication over the internet to an off site location
Dear All,
We would like to change our backup environment from tape to disk based and replicate the local disk based backups to an off site location (Datacenter)over the internet.
We like to install a local Backup Exec 15 server with a storage (NAS or SAN) an attach it via iSCSI. The same setup will be in the off site location. We will perform deduplication backup to disk locally and run optimized deduplication backups to the off site location.
We intend to use BE2015 capacity edition which has all the options and also cover the license to install a second BES server. The backup should go over the internet and not necessary VPN (trying to avoid it)
I have some question?
1) Is this a scenario which is common and Backup Exec 15 supports it?
2) Would I need CASO for two backup servers?
3) I understand to reach the other BES server over the internet ports have to be open in the firewall. Does it only affect ports on the target server?
4) How does BES connect to each other, IP only or DNS name too?
The first backup will be seeded locally.
Thanks,
Edy
1) Yes, this is a common scenario and supported by BE 15.
2) CASO is not necessarily required, though in your setup, CASO and DeDupe licenses are required for Optimized Duplication.
3) Ports would need to be open on both servers. These KBs may help -

4) I believe, both.
