Restore from external USB

We have BE2012 set to run a full backup of a domain controller to the appliance. The next stage is a duplicate backup sent off to an external USB drive attached to another server on the network. I am trying to see how I would restore the backup from the USB instead of the appliance in the event the data from the appliance is lost.

  • If the appliance is working correctly then you boot off the same SDR DVD and use the wizard to attache to the appliance over the network. Then you use the automated mode in the SDR environment as it should find everything via the appliance itself.

  • If the SDR / SSP green indicator was enabled in the original backup job and you have the updated .DR file from the duplicate job (which might be on your USB drive with the backup data already), you could probably plug the USB disk into the hardware you are restoring onto, and then boot off the SDR DVD.

Once you get into the SDR console, you might have to use the manual method that allows you to browse to the .DR file and browse to the disk storage location  instead of using the automated method.

I have not tested the above description with USB, but have used similar manual methods when the backup data is on a network share (instead of on a USB disk)

  • Is there an easier way to restore from the USB if the appliance is still working normally? Is there a way to just select the USB as the source of the restore?
