Restore tables with BE

Hi i have a question:

Backup Exec 2012 can restore tables? or just restore entire databases?

thanks

  • I did some research on this and found this discussion which talks about Microsoft removeing the ability to do this level of a restore in v7.  https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-restore-single-sql-table-using-backup-exec-86

and on a side note since I was looking...here is a document talking about using Netbackup to Restore SQL from Backup Exec images and some of the limitations    (such as 'sqlTable backups cannot be restored, though they are included in the backup image and can be selected for restore. If you try to restore a table, the job fails with the error "unsupported object was selected for restore')   http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO69725

    Hope this helps

  • Just entire databases.  The ability to restore table would add inconsistency and instability to SQL databases.

  • Symantec NetBackup can do table level restores, and can a number of other backup products.

When an Enterprise product can do it, why would you say "The ability to restore table would add inconsistency and instability to SQL databases?"

Typically when one does a table restore, it's to a temp database, and it's to restore very specific information that is needed.  It's then typically merged as needed into Prod.  You're not typically restoring a table over an existing production database.

  • I have understood that earlier versions of BE if they could do that right?

  • Hello, my question is about the Backup Exec 2012, still i do not know the NetBackup product, thanks for the comment ...
