Restoring Exchange mailbox.

Hi

I am backing up Exchange 2003 to backup exec 11d, and have just noticed that when i try and restore an individual item from the mailbox store, it appears to be completely empty. If I go back a couple of weeks, then I can see the individual items no problem. I then noticed in the actual backup job, I couldn't access the mailboxes either, but have resolved this by restarting the backup exec agent on the exchange server. I'm fairly confident I will now be able to restore individual items again from future backups, but I still can't see them on any of the backups for the last 2 weeks.

There are no errors in the job log and the backup of the store seems to take around 50 minutes, see as normal, so I assume it is actually backing up something and that the data is all there, but i just can't get at it. Has anyone out there has come across this before and managed to resolve this or am I just going to have to write off these backups?

I have attached a screen shot to try and demonstrate the problem, as you can see, all the mailboxes are there for the backup on 21st July, but for 28th July there is nothing.

Thanks in advance

Horace

  • Hi Please duplicate backup from tape to disk ,when you want to do restore for which catalog for GRT would be recreated. Please see link below to how do it http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH24481 Edited Also for why this might have happened please check link below if that is applicable in your case. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH56302 Also would like to suggest ensure you are on 11d 7170 build with sp5 and updates, and remoteagent on exchange server is fully patched up too. In mean while duplicating backup to disk should help you to do restore. Thanks

  • Hi It does look as though I need to do a duplicate to disk, looking through the articles you've mentioned. However, my backup exec only gives me the option to duplicate to a tape drive. Ans Not sure what do you mean by my backupexec only gives me option to duplicate to tape.can you give more details on why you are not able to duplicate to disk. Thanks
  • Hi

Apologies for not getting back to you sooner, our internet connection has been down all week, so I haven't been able to post a reply.

It does look as though I need to do a duplicate to disk, looking through the articles you've mentioned. However, my backup exec only gives me the option to duplicate to a tape drive. I can confirm that we are on 11d 7170 build with sp5, so that isn't the issue.

I've got my connection back now, so can do a bit more googling, but if you have any ideas...

By the way, having restarted the exchange agent, the backups seem to be working properly again now, and I can see the individual mailboxes in all of the backups since.

    thanks

  • It's ok, I've just figured out that i need to add a 'Removable backup to disk folder'. Now I can duplicate to disk, so will give that a go and let you know how that goes.

  • If you are using a USB disk, you should be using a normal B2D folder.  Removable B2D folders are meant for things like Jaz and RDX drives.
