RMAL and VTL query

I am about to increase the available disk space on our oldest server which now does RMAL duty for us, we are about to configure a VTL, is it possible to backup to the VTL and THEN copy to the local tape devices on the RMAL server or do i have to D2D2T on a volume attached to the main backup server to "stage" the backups.

AND if i were to do this, would the RMAL server move the data internally or would the main server suck up bandwidth using our network to copy the data in which case i will D2D centrally and then out 2T.
