SCC cluster 2007 needs to be backed up using Symantec Back-up Exec on dedicated back-up Lan.

Hi Thanks for your support. I have a quick question. How we can take back-up of Exchange 2007 SCC Cluster using back-up Exec on a dedicated back-up Lan. How its going to work if we fail over the server from passive node to active node. Your Quick response will be highly appricated.
  • Hi,

It should work like a normal cluster...in this case you wouldn't select individual nodes. You'd select the virtual node after running the cluster configuration wizard on the media server. This would then display the virtual node in your selection list.

This way, whatever happens between physical nodes, you'd always be able to back up the Information Store any anything else. You can still back up things like System State on the physical servers, but NEVER select the cluster resources explicitly on them...

For your dedicated LAN, in your selection list I'd suggest looking at creating a custom selection list and add in the IP addresses of the backup VLAN. If your server has one too, go into Tools --> Options --> Network and select that specific NIC.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Craig,

    Thanks for your reply.

Is this configuration going to work with Dedicated back-up Lan. Switch connecting Exchange mailbox server and back-up Exec servers.

  • I don't see why not...when you add in your selections, use the IP address of the backup NICs as I mentioned. then within BE itself you can expressly select a NIC to use...you'd choose your backup VLAN NIC.

  • Hi Craig,

    Thanks alot for your help.

We will be using different Nic for Exchange server as well for back-up i.e. its going to be in a different LAN.

So, if we failover the cluster how can our BE will come to know that Active server has changed and now passive node is in Active state.

  • I don't think it would matter, no...you could assign another NIC to your virtual node and give this an IP address on your backup VLAN...

  • I doubt it will handle the failover during a backup job very well and you may get a job failure if this happens, but it shodul be able to handle doing the backup form either node.

BTW One of the requirements to use a backup lan in a cluster is that all virtual servers for clustered resources do have an IP address on the backup LAN (in addtion to the expected one on the main LAN.)

The media server may also have to be able to name resolve the node and cluster server names to the Backup Lan and/or you may have ot use IP addresses instead of names for your backup selections.

  • Hi Colin,

    Thanks for your reply.

Its ok with us if back-up fails if the cluster fails over while back-up is going on.

What we want is once cluster fails over and then during the next back-up windows how BE will be able to know that the owner of the cluster and now back-up has to be taken from different node.
