Servers not available in Remote Selections option

Logging onto a primary server in our network and going to create a new backup solution (daily / weekly), when I click on the following:
Source > Selections > Remote Selections > Microsoft Windows Network
I am able to see our domain listed....but can only see 6 out of the available 15 servers within that domain.
This is confusing further still when this morning, I clicked through the same path and could only find 3 servers!? It seems to show random numbers of servers erach time I try this...

Any ideas on why this is and what can be done to resolve it? Is it Windows Server or Symantech Backup Exec issue?

  • Hi,

    You can troubleshoot as follows:

    1. Test DNS from the media server and make sure it can resolve name/IP of your remote servers;

    2. Restart the media server and check again...

    3. Make sure the RAWS agents are started up on the remote servers;

    4. Make sure that any firewall installed and running allows port 10000 through (RAWS service).

    Thanks!

  • Thanks CraigV

    1 - I can ping both IP addresses and DNS names from the server to all other 15 servers in the network
    2 - Restarted with no change
    3 - Remote Agent for Windows: has never been installed on any remote servers previously...and there was never a problem before
    4 - See 3, above

    It seems to be, each time I close Backup Exec and re-open it again (5mins, 15mins, 30mins, etc)  and check the Remote Selection list, there is a different set of between 3-6 of our servers listed.

    Strange

  • Is the Computer Browser service started on the servers which do not show up ?

    Try restarting this service on a test group of few servers and check if they appear.

  • VJware
    Nope, no joy with that either.

    Im wondering if its just some random 'network issue'...

  • Maybe. On the media server, open my network places and check if these servers appear here or not.

  • Yep - just tried this: the same 4 servers that are currently listed in Remote Selections are the only ones listed in My Network Places...

  • Sounds possibly like an intermittent network issue. Long shot, but check if NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled or not.

  • VJWare - it's a network issue for sure.
    I've logged onto  2 other servers that are local to the site I am currently at, and on both of these, the same 4 servers are listed in My Network Places...however, I can Start>Run and browse to shared network-drives on any of the remaining 15 remote-servers....
