Simplify tape backup process in BE 2010 R2 using single LTO-4 tape drive

Hi All,

Is there a way to make the tape backup insertion easier rather than:

1. go to Devices tab and then right click and inventory the tape manually.
2. go to Job Monitor tab and right click the backup job name then click on Run now command ?

this is what i do everyday to do the daily tape backup.

It would be great if somehow the backup job validate the required tape before it is overwriting it.

Thanks.

  • Assuming the tape is already in the BE database and BE considers it overwritable, an inventory job should not be required in a single stand-alone tape drive.  But it never hurt either, and an inventory can be scheduled via the GUI, just like a backup.

  • Hello Albert,

You can schedule the job as per your requirement. And change the tapes daily before the job starts. There is no need to go and Inventory the tape daily.

If you think that Inventory is still a good option then you can also schedule an Inventory job before the job starts.

    Thanks,

  • ah.. so the key here is taht inserting the correct tape before the job start ?

in that way if the job started it will verify the tape name and then performs the write according to the retention policy ?

  • You just have to make sure that the correct tape is inserted. When the job will start it will look for the tape in the drive. When the tape is found it will check if the tape is overwritable or not. If the tape is overwritable and in the correct media set then it will start writing the data to the tape. If the tape is not overwritable then it will push the tape out of the drive and will Alert to insert Overwritable tape.

    Thanks.

    Actually,there is

This is the only way to tell Back\exec that a new volume has been mounted

    Albert

you can set up a BEMCMD joband run it from Task Manager shortly before the nightly jobis scheduled

  • Thanks Larry, so in this case the operation is "scheduled" not automated as in autorun in CD-ROM ?
