Symantec recommends AD recovery agent for Microsoft Exchange

Hi,

We're running Backup Exec 2010 R2 SP1, recently I've been getting after backup message saying"

The following backup sets contain Microsoft Exchange data. Symantec recommends that you install and use the Active Directory Recovery Agent to better manage your Microsoft Exchange data:
    \\EXCHSVR.local\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group
    \\EXCHSVR.local\Microsoft Information Store\Second Storage Group
To learn more about Backup Exec agents and options, go to http://entsupport.symantec.com/umi/V-79-8192-58206.

We already have our Exchange agent license.

Why do we need to buy AD Agent for backing up exchange? Why 2 license for one machine?

Does this means our Exchange backup is not complete?

Can someone please explain.

Regards,

Just Confuse

  • I believe there is absolutely nothing with the AD Agent and Exchange backups. AD Agent is used for the GRT restore of Active Directory. So its just that in addition to your Exchange GRT data if you even want to restore the Active Diorectory components (like Users, Groups, etc) then its recommended to you the AD agent license.

But as I said earlier you can safely ignore this message as it wil not hamper your Exchange database backups and restores using the GRT option for Exchange too.

    Thanks,

  • This is just an informative message which you can safely ignore. There is no need for Active Directory agent to backup the Exchange databases. Your Exchange backups complete and are still Good for the restore even thou you get that message. Exchange agent license is enough for protecting Exchange databases so no need for AD agent license to protect Exchange.

  • Hi Sush,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Would you know what would AD agent bring to exchange backup? Why symantec is recommending it?

    Thanks,
