     To recover from disaster you need to have a backup of C drive and the System state 

     along with the shadow copy components. 

     EDIT: Yes you need to backup the Windows directory.

  • ...not necessarily. I have recovered a system that crashed last year by restoring the data, and then the System State. I had to rebuild the server from scratch, but it is possible to restore the server just with data + System State!

    Yes it essential to have C ,System state, Shadow copy component backup  at same point for doing disaster recovery of that server
