Tape library connected with SAN switch for VMware backup.

Hi,

We are going for a BE 2012 installation.

The existing infra as follows:-

Three VMware host server .

One Vcenter server.

The VMware VMs were inside the SAN storage server, with two SAN switch for high availability.

A Tape library is connected with the SAN switch.

Now, we have the license of three VMware host and one windows license for VCenter and one Tape library option for second drive.

Is this license enough.

How could implement the same.

Please, help for a rough idea of the deployment.

Any recommendation , best practrice........

    Which server is going to be the media server & does this media server have access to the SAN ?

    In addition to the above, you would require the Media server license + if you are performing any application GRT (AD, Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint), you would require the appropriate number of application & database licenses as well..

    Hi,

    The media server have connection with the SAN switch.

    No GRT will be used  only VM backup need to be done through LAN.

    My query is does we required Ent. license to backup VMware VM on to the tape library (FC Connected).

    or

    Normal VMware license will work as given in my previous post.

    A VMware license which provides support for VADP is sufficient...

    From Backup Exec perspective, you would require a media server license + Agent for VMware for each VMware host + LEO (if using the second tape drive) + RAWS (if you are planning a RAWS based backup of the vCenter)

    Not sure why your tape drive is drawn in the picture as connected/multi-pathed to the EMC Storage, it only needs zoning to the media server. However the media server does need zoning/connecting to the EMC storage to enable SAN Transport against the VMware Agent backup.

     

    Note if you were looking at the NDMP Option you would connct the tape library to the EMC, however then you lose the advantages provided by the VMware agent.

    No idea about the above statement. Please, explane just for my understanding.

    We were going for LAN based backup of the VMs and further the backup were going to  tape library.

    With zoning you show/hide devices (compare it with a vlan).
    If you don't implement zoning your ESX servers and EMC san will 'see' the tapelibrary.

    When you implement zoning you make the library only visable for the Backup Exec server.
