The virtual machine has physical disk(s). The disk marked physical RDM will not be backed up.

Hello Everyone,

We are a small firm running Backup Exec 2014 SP1 for backup process. Most of our backup jobs are VM servers & few of them are physical server backups. Recently we are experiencing problems with the VM machine backup. Please check the below error message:

The virtual machine has physical disk(s). The disk marked physical RDM will not be backed up. Disk 'XXXXXX.vmdk' is marked as physical RDM. Ignoring for backup.

more info:

Server OS : windows 2008 r2

Agent installed : yes

Backup schedule: FULL VM backup(weekly once)

Could anyone had this issue in the past, please help me by providing a solution for this problem

Thanks

Rahavendran

  • As the error message says, RDM disks cannot be backed up as part of a VM backup.  To backup these VM's, you need to install the remote agent in them and back them up as if they are physical machines.

  • You are entitled to load the remote agent on any number of VM's on hosts which are licensed with the hypervisor agent. As such, you are entitled to back it up as of it is a physical machine without further license. You can confirm that with the Symantec Licencing department. However, if you are backing up a real physical machine then you need to get a remote agent license for this physical machine. The V-Ray edition for not include any remote agent license for physical machines
  • Add the VM to the console as if it is a physical machine and then create a back job. Read the Backup chapter in the Admin Guide. Doing the backup this way, there is no .vmdk to restore. To recover your server, you need to create a new VM and then recovery this VM as of you would a physical machine. Read the recovery chapter in the Admin Guide

  • We have a backup exec 2014 vray edition. Do we need to buy a license if we are backing up a physical server.

so we can create a new job for that  virtual server like selecting the drives and run as a separate job. For this do we need to buy a license?. Becuase this is still a virtual machine and remote agent is already installed. I can create a new job by selecting the drives(including independent drive). Will this work?

Could you please clarify this issue.

  • Yes, a license will be required since the machine is being backed up as physical.

  • If you dont mind, could you please explain more by providing steps to backup virtual machine as an physical machine. In case of server failure, can i restore the server(.vmdk) from the backup tape.
