Trial options

I'm looking into trying to update to Backup Exec 2010 here and I've downloaded the trial, only problem is my only server with a tape drive already has 12.5 installed. Is there anyway for me to give 2010 a shot without upgrading the current 12.5? Is my only option to upgrade, uninstall when the trial is over, then completely reinstall 12.5? There has to be a more convenient way.
  • ...I'd go 1 step further and suggest you download a free virtual application like Virtual Box, and create a VM/s. Once done, load up BE 2010. This is going to give you the option of running your live environment unchanged for now, and a test environment on your laptop.
When you upgrade, everything SHOULD carry across. However, I have had it on 3 occasions where my data was trashed...could have been because of McAfee blocking something during the upgrade process, so be aware that something can go wrong. On the whole though, the upgrade is pretty seamless.

Basically don't run something in your environment and then revert to the older version...test properly first, and run with it.
  • as an additional question, say during my trial I need to restore files that were backed up with 12.5. Will 2010 be able to restore files backed up by 12.5
  • Hi there,

There is no way to have both Bakcup Exec 12.5 and Backup exec 2010 running on the same server, you can either run Backup Exec 12.5 or you may upgrade to Backup Exec 2010.

One thing which you can do here is, you can take a copy of your current DATA and CATALOG folder for Backup exec 12.5, and then upgrade to Backup exec 2010, once the trial is over or once you want to go backup to backup exec 12.5, you  have to completely unistall the Backup Exec 2010 and reinstall Backup exec 12.5 however, you do not have to recreate all the jobs and other configurations from sratch, you can use the data and catalogs folder copied from old Backup Exec 12.5 and get all your previous 12.5 jobs, configurations back.

There is a procedure for taking backup of the DATA and CATALOG procedure which i can forward to you if you decide to go this way.

  • Thanks Tech. Appreciate the information.

So is there a way for my jobs in 12.5 to carry over to 2010? I don't want to be stuck in a situation where to restore files I have to uninstall 2010, reinstall 12.5, then restore the DATA and CATALOG folders.

Also, what if the opposite happens. What if a backup that took place during my 2010 trial had files that needed to be restored, and my trial is over and now I'm back to 12.5. Is there anyway for me to restore those files?
  • when you upgrade from Backup Exec 12.5 to Backup Exec 2010, all the jobs and other configuration should automatically get upgraded, so you do not have to recreate anything. also you should be able to restore the data which was backed up by Backup exec 12.5 from backup exec 2010. So you do not have to unistall BE 2010 in order to restore data which was backed up by 12.5

    Regarding other question,

yes, you need to have BE 2010 to restore the files backed up from BE 2010, but for this, you can also copy the data and catalog folder for BE 2010, so that you can reinstall BE 2010 and use the data and catalog folder to get all configuraiton back.

  • Craig and Tech,

Want to thank both of you for the help. Virtual looks like my best solution as of now. Appreciate your time.
