"Updating Catalogs" Exchange 2007 GRT backup

im having some more troubles with the BE2010 R2 and the exchange 2007 GRT backup.

Exchange Server: Win server 2003 R2 X64 SP2, 16 GB RAM, Exchange 2007 SP2,

Backup server: Win 2008R2, 12GB RAM, 20 TB Dedup folder (6 TB used) on RAID 5, System disk 136GB on RAID0, Backup exec 2010r2 SP1

i have had problem with the speed of our Exchange backup since we installed BE2010 R2 and using the GRT option to be able to restore single mails etc.

Because of the bad performence i had to do the Exchange backup like this in a Policy:

Fridays: Full backup do dedup store then duplicate to tape (250GB storage group)

all other days: Differential to dedup store then duplicate to tape

Ok, fine, the backup speed is NOT good in any way, but my problem now is that after BE has backed up the changed data on the exchange, and when BE starts to "update catalogs", it takes forever. Even now when im writing this, the Diff backup is hanging on Updating Catalogs" and have beed doing that för 23 hours, the total backed up data is 6,5GB and that took about 40 minutes.
If a check at the propertys of the running job in BE and at "Current File" it always says: "Current File: DLLs."

last time this happend, like 6 days ago, i restarted the backup server and then it went on a couple of days and now we are here again......

Anyone else who have had this problem?

After upgrading from backup exec 2010R2 to 2010R3 the backup speed was  like 5-6 times greater, now i can run full backups every day.

It seemed to be an issue with BE 12,5 and the following article says that the next (2010) version will solve this issue, but it doesn't seem to help you:

Is your full backup also taking so much time on 'updating catalogs' ?

Updating catalogs from Exchange GRT backups will always take a significantly longer time than just simply the time needed to transfer the files as BE must go into every mailbox to catalog the single subfolders and mail items.

However 23 hours is really long and I would imagine that something else is wrong here. Did you install SP1 for R2 and the latest hotfixes released after that? Be sure to also update the Remote Agents (especially the one on the exchange server).

    Hi atos,

    Couple of questions:

    1. Are you backing up data with the Exchange job? If so, what happens when you run Exchange by itself?

    2. Are you using AOFO? If so, turn it off for the job...

    Thanks,

    Craig

Yes i have read that article, one thing ive noticed though.

Its very common in articles about Exchange backups thats its Full backup And Incremental backups.

Why is that, is it more recomended to run Incremental than Differential when it comes to Exchange? the thing about incrementals is that it will be more work and time to restore the backup if the exchange fails, or have a missed something?

About the Full backup, i dont know, i had so much trouble with the performence so i did not notice if the catalog update takes long time. if im able to, i will check this weekend if the catalog update takes as loong with the full backup.

One thing i did last time (like 2 days before the previous Full backup), was to restart the backup server, rerun the job and then it went much faster...

    best regards Johan

Yes, ive installed SP1, BUT when im running live update is says that SP1 is ready for download.

Very strange, because ive downloaded SP1 manually and installed it, its installed, and the agents are updated on the remote servers.

so if there are any hotfixes after SP1 i presume that i dont se them because live update thinks that i havnt installed SP1? (our proxy wont let me download via Live update in BE, thats why im downloded it manually.)

I can try to install the SP1 again and se if that helps.

EDIT: ive "installed" the SP1 manually again, now, BE live update "know that its installed, there are one hotfix avalible now, Hotfix 150096 but as it doesnt seems relevant to my issues i dont need to hurry and install the hotfix.

    best regards

    Johan

There are at least 4 or 5 hotfixes after SP1.  The hotfix mentioned is just the first.  You got to install it and then re-run LiveUpdate a couple more times to get all the hotfixes that were released after SP1.

Thats only partly correct atos. HF150096 is a prerequisite for 4 or 5 other Hotfixes that your LU does not show as your installation does not mee the requirements.

One of them is http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH148347 which fixes a bunch of exchange issues. Although your issue is not listed specifically there is still the possibility that it might be related to something that was fixed.

    Hello Folks,

We already upgraded to BE 2010 R3 with the latest Hotfixes, and we are stuck with the same problem.

Exchange Server is EX 2010 SP1 Rollup 3. Also the Management Tools on the BE Server

    Backing Up 5 - 8 GB Exchange Logs takes 15 - 25 Minutes

Updating the Catalog up to many hours.

Symantec Support is already involved but seems to be lost on the Issue.

    Anyone has any Ideas?

    Cheers

    Holger
