Upgrading from Win2008r2/BE2012 to Win2012r2/BE15, how?

Hi all,

I am about to reinstall our backup server with Windows 2012 r2 and install Backup Exec 15. Currently Windows 2008r2 and Backup Exec 2012 is installed.

I want to save the current backup configuration and history from BE2012.

How should I go about doing this?

I'm thinking:
1. Upgrade to BE15 on the current Windows installation
2. Copy the Catalogs and Data folders to another disk
3. Install Windows 2012r2
4. Install BE15
5. Shut down all the BE services, restore the database using BEUtility
6. Replace Catalogs and Data folders
7. Update RAWS on all target servers

Am I missing something?

Regards

  • Ok, so I've done the reinstall and everything seems to be running fine.

    The steps I took:
    1. Upgraded to BE15 on the old Windows installation
    2. Stopped BE and SQLExpress services and copied the Catalogs and Data folders to another disk
    3. Installed Windows 2012r2
    4. Installed BE15
    5. Stopped BE and SQLExpress services and replaced Data and Catalogs folders
    6. Restart BE and SQLEpress services, restored the database from backup using the Copy Database command in the BEutility
    7. Updated RAWS on all target servers

  • Hi,

In order to carry over your BEDB and legacy catalogs, upgrading the current media server before reinstalling if your best option. It means you don't have to recatalog all your tapes. That said, you'll have to redo all your jobs as things stand because BE 2015 has changed the way the jobs run.

But your process above is correct. if you keep the same server name, read below:

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH216706

The steps would be the same for BE 2015, except the current server is where these steps will be performed.

    Thanks!

  • Slight change in step 5 and 6.

    5) Stop BE services, Replace Data and Catalogs folder.

    6) Start BE services, restore the database from backup using BEutility.

  • Also before you upgrade to Backup Exec 15 make sure You have Backup Exec 2012 fully patched up to SP4 and Hotfix 217347

  • Would the server name be the same or different ? If different, there will be an additional step involved, else not.

  • Which steps? I will most likely keep the server name but the info could be useful for others in the same situation.

    Thanks :)

  • Steps 4 & 5 is to be used from this KB - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH67296

  • Thanks for the reply.

I read somewhere (on symantec.com) that when I upgrade to BE15 the installation process will automatically change the jobs so they work correctly with BE 15. Isn't that correct?

Edit: I didn't have to change any jobs. The installation process went through the jobs and found that non needed to be manually edited. I guess the jobs I have were plain and simple :)
