USB disks all online

I've had just the opposite. I have a rotating pool of 4 drives (connect one at a time & switch out weekly) and today, BE2012 decided to report them ALL online. (They all have different drive letters, and are configured as B2D devices.)

Something's definitely strange with the disk detection.

  • If the storage on these disk are defined as Disk Storage which is meant for fixed disk.  Delete them and try to define Disk Cartridge Device on them.  Desk Cartridge Device is meant for removable disk, like USB flash drive, etc.

  • I just looked at one of my servers - The USB hard drive doesn't show up to BE as a removable device. The only options I have are:

    -Disk Storage

    -Import Legacy B2D

    -Disk Cartridge (Greyed out)

  • For BE 2012, Disk Storage is for fixed disk like those mounted internally in your machine chassis.  The media in the Disk Storage is managed by DLM.

I would suggest that you open a support case with Symantec so that they can investigate why your USB disks are recognised as fixed disks.

  • Dear Sir:

I would suggest that you delete all of the configured B2D devices that point to the USB disk, disconnect any of thise disks from the server, restart the BE servces, and connect one of them. You should be able to configure that single USB disk as a regular Disk Storage device.

Repeat the operation for the remaining disks, and test swapping rhem and using them to make sure BE works correctly with all the disks,

Please check the Administrator´s Guide chapter on disk storage to make sure you understand how BE handles these devices in the new version, specially in what regards to space reclamation.

Additionally, can you please indicate tha make and model of the USB disks that you are using.

    Regards,

  • If you would read the discussion carefully, you would see that the storage on his disks are already defined as Disk Storage.
