V-79-57344-4611

I am running on MS Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server Service Pack 2, using Backup Exec for Windows Server Small Business Server Suite Version 11.0 Rev. 6235.

I tried restoring a folder of a mailbox, but it failed. The error message that I got is,

V-79-57344-4611 - An error occurred creating or accessing the directory  specified for this operation. Ensure that the directory is accessible and can be written to.

I click on the link but it's broken.

What should I do? Please advise... Thank you.
  • Hi tstay -

In the past I have seen this error populate when the staging area is not specified in the restore job properties. When restoring individual individual items from an Information Store backup Backup Exec needs to temporarily stage the entire database to a path on the media server.

It is recommended to not use system volumes for staging areas because of the potentially large file sizes created.

You can specify the staging area go into the Restore Job Properties and under settings click Advanced. Then enter a path in the "Path on media server for staging temporary restore data when restoring individual items from tape." and save. Re-run the restore.

    I hope this helps!

  • Thank you. Can I delete the file after the restoration completes? Or will the system delete the file automatically?
  • You will not need to delete the data because the staged data is deleted automatically when the restore is complete. The staging area is meant to be a temporary location.

  • I found that the "Staging Folder" is by default set as "C:\Temp". Do you mean that the reason why the job failed because there's not enough space on my system drive?

Anyway, I tried restoring the folder again, and this time, it succeeded. I didn't alter the properties of the job. What I did was just restarting the job. But the only difference was that, this time, the user was online reading his email (logged on to the server) when I was doing the job restoration. Does that matter?
  • Did the job fail when the user was online?

If not did the customer notice any connection issues to Outlook?

When restoring the information store the store will be dismounted by either Backup Exec or by Exchange manually. If the restore ran correctly with no failures then I assume you selected Backup Exec to dismount the database before restore. If you did not, then you manually do it in Exchange System Manager. I would recommend nobody be logged on when restoring for this reason.

As for the restore working without changing the job settings other than restarting the job, maybe a lock or something was placed on that folder that prevented the data to write to the Temp location. Just a guess, but the error you received the first time indicates a staging area issue.

  • Did the job fail when the user was online?
No, it succeeded when the user was online, but failed when he was offline.

If not did the customer notice any connection issues to Outlook?
No. But when I notice that he was online when I was retrying the job, I asked him to close Outlook. By then, the job has already run for at least 5 minutes.

I don't really know whether I chose to dismount the information store or manually do it in Exchange Manager. All I did was just followed the wizard, and the configuration are left as default. So anyway, what you recommend is to ask all of the users (including those who have got nothing to do it) to log off before performing the job, am I right to say that?
