Version differences...

I have version 10d and version 12.5. Both were used on win2003 servers that are no longer in use. Hence I want to install them on new machines and use them there instead - which seems to be fine in terms of licensing etc. However, what's the difference between 10d and version 12.5.? I know 12.5 is obviously newer, but will 10d only be useable on win2003 server and below, while 12.5 can be used on win2008?
  • 10d can be installed on Win 2003 and lower versions of windows.

BE12.5 can be installed on Win 2008 and lower versions.

  • If you're not going to upgrade to BE 2010 R3 (which you can do directly from BE 12.5, but not from 10d...this is a multi-step approach), then why not just install BE 12.5 on both of the servers? You'd have something a bit newer than 10d.

Whatever you do, you need a copy of your Data and Catalogs folders in order to carry your details of your backup server across. So do that before you do anything else...

  • why not just install BE 12.5 on both of the servers?

He cannot do that because the BE 10d licence is not the same as BE 12.5

  • Obviously not, but if he contacts Symantec he is able to get licenses to run the other server on 10d...unless there was a cost implication or application implication.

  • ...  but you are asking him to run both servers on BE 12.5 and not BE 10d.  There is obviously an upgrading cost involved in upgrading BE 10d to BE 12.5.
