VMware feature

Does anyone else know the name of the licensed feature of vSphere that I need to be able to leverage AVVI?  I suspect that it is not a seperate license itself, but rather one of the bundled features that is present within one or more of the vSphere licences.  Just trying to determine exactly which feature it is.  Thanks.

  • Yes, you are right in VADP is the only licensed feature required from a BE perspective.

  • The feature required is the vStorage API
  • Thanks.

Found this which lists which versions and bundles of the various vSphere v5.x offerings include the various VMware vSphere features (several of which have the term 'vStorage API' or 'Data Protection' in their names):

You say 'vStorage API' but there are two principal features with the text 'vStorage APIs' in their names:

    1) 'vStorage APIs for Data Protection'    (aka VADP)

    2) 'vSphere vStorage APIs for Array Integration'   (aka VAAI)

...and there are also two other features with 'API' in their names; such as:

    3) 'Storage APIs'

    4) 'vSphere API'

...and there is also another feature with 'Data Protection' in its name:

    5) 'vSphere Data Protection'    (aka VDP)

...but I didn't see in the list linked above the other VMware vSphere feature that I'm aware of which is:

    6) 'vSphere Data Protection Advanced'  (aka VDPA)

I'm fairly sure that 'NetBackup V-Ray' and 'Backup Exec Agent for VMware and Hyper-V' (aka BE AVVI) require versions of VMware vSphere that incorporate 'vStorage APIs for Data Protection' (aka VADP) - and thus I can ignore (for my purposes right now) 'VAAI', 'VDP' and 'VDPA' which are seperate licenced features from 'VADP'.  Is this correct?

    Phew.
